You'll need to pop out to Amazon, NewEgg, TigerDirect, or whatever eTailer you choose and buy an OEM license. If the unit is not under warranty, my experience with Dell has been they won't even sell you a disc. Dell has added their branding to certain areas of Windows (typically Internet Explorer, the System control panel, and the Windows boot screen). This is identical to the media you get from a Microsoft-branded OEM DVD, with one very, very minor difference.

Windows 10 (Then select Download tool now.) Windows 11 (Then select Download tool now. To go directly to one of the versions, select one of these links: Windows 7. You have absolutely everything you need.Īlso: If the unit is under warranty, my experience with Dell has always been they'll send you a copy of their branded OEM Windows DVD. On that website, you can select a version of Windows and create your own installation media using either a USB flash drive or a DVD. Grab a 4GB flash drive, download RUFUS, and follow the directions in Gary's post above. I CAN grab a DVD drive, but it would be out of my computer which is something I'd prefer to avoid, but will do if necessary. 3 months in and the company was a far greater mess before I arrived. Yes, I have a DVD, it just cannot be used on a machine without the drive. Wouldn't Dell send you a recovery DVD? They are all the same, is there somebody locally you could borrow one from? Jesus man, no DVD, no DVD drive, you need to keep this shit around :) I'd have to remove it out of my tower since I'm one of the only people with one, it'd be a pain, but it's something I just may have to do. Yah that's what I was considering as well. Or open the case and attach a DVD drive temporarily.

Yes, you will need to use a different computer to create the ISO and to create the bootable USB drive, but once you do you'll be golden.Īlso, to answer the original question, yes, you can use a retail copy of Windows but it's already OEM licensed, presumably, so idk why you would do that, you seem to have everything you need except (maybe) the spare computer that will allow you to create the ISO and bootable USB drive. You do have the recovery disc which means all you need to do now is create the ISO and use RUFUS as Gary Williams suggested. But I didn't have the recovery discs to begin with so I had no choice but to talk to dell. Whether or not the OS is OEM licensed, it should still work on compatible hardware, even if it's a bootable USB drive. In fact, that's what they tried to sell me when until I finally talked them into sending me a replacement CD once. If you have the CD and a different machine with a CD drive, then you have an ISO file. I've been told the normal Win 7 ISO isn't supposed to be used and it has to be an OEM copy. That's what I want to do which is why I need the ISO file from Dell. Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

Why not just copy the ISO to USB and install from that? They tell me to contact the manufacturer which did not go well. It won't let me download from Microsoft's website because it's an OEM key.
